Puttin' on the Ritz with the Belmond Andean Explorer
The most luxurious trains in South America is easily one of the ritziest experiences of Peru. While traveling between Cusco and Arequipa, enjoy the chic sleeping arrangements, the beautiful sounds of the piano car, and five star dining aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer. The resident chef prepares only the most delectable dishes that energize your spirit and warm your soul. The service is top notch and the drinks are delicious. On top of all that, there is a library, boutique, and a spa. Nothing says relaxation better than beautiful scenery and optimized self-care.
You will have the option of two or three day excursions. This depends on where you’d like to end up. From Cusco to Puno (Lake Titicaca), it’s a two day journey. From Arequipa to Cusco or vice versa, it takes an extra day. We encourage you to see all three locations to get a well-rounded Peruvian experience.
As the train brings you through the countryside, you’ll feel like you’re floating between the peaks and valleys. The bubbling brooks, quilted patchwork fields, and open skies lend themselves well to any photographer or nature admirer. Likewise, it serves as a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life without giving up the comfort. This romantic getaway train will satisfy your desire to experience the countryside while not yielding any of the luxury. You’ll view better sites than when you’re traveling via bus or plane. Moreover, you’re free to walk around the most opulent trains of South American while in transit. What could be more accommodating than that?!
The Hiram Bingham Train to Mystical Machu Picchu
The sister train to the lavish Belmond Andean Explorer is the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train. Enjoy the soothing pace of the train while it takes you through the sacred valley to Machu Picchu. Named after the American explorer who “re-discovered” the Incan city of Machu Picchu. In 1911, he was led to the now-famous archaeological site by indigenous locals. He brought his findings back to America, as he was a professor of South American history, making famous the beloved world wonder. However, it is believed that it had truly been rediscovered by other explorers and missionaries before Bingham made his famous trek. Never the less, today he is honored and his name is carried through the sacred valley on a daily basis.
Envision yourself as the early twentieth century explorer, making your way through “uncharted” territories as the train winds through the lush Peruvian country side. Marvel at the rocky edges and green pastures. If you happen to be traveling after the rainy season, you will be amazed at the crystal clear streams that snake their way through the valley and over the mountain sides.
Start your morning out with brunch and a cocktail. Enjoy traditional music and dance your heart out as the train makes its way to the globetrotter’s mecca. The train leaves outside of Cusco in Piroy, journeys through the Sacred Valley, and peaks at Machu Picchu. So that you don’t miss any of the gorgeous scenery, it stops overnight at one of Belmond’s finest hotels along the route. This bucolic experience strikes up a fanciful and comfortable mood. You have the option between luxurious and quaint trains in South America that really capture the essence of the latino culture and diverse countrysides.
Trains in South America Soar Above the Clouds
Feel like you’re peacefully gliding along the Belgrano Railway on the Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds). This train gives the traveler a spectacular view of the Andes in Argentina all the way to the Chilean border. You can enjoy breakfast, snacks, and a full bar. The maximum altitude reached is just a little under 14,000 feet (4200 meters)! You’ll really feel as though you’re gliding above the clouds as you cross over one of the many bridges and viaducts. Experience the mystery of Andean tunnels, as this route has 21. A railway of spirals and zig-zags help the train safely reach altitude and provides a magnificent panoramic view.
The round trip is around 16 hours, however there are multiple stops. Many travelers go one way and find a different route or carry onward to other countries. Perhaps once you’ve spent eight hours among the heavens, you’d like to make your way to Peru or Ecuador for one of our other beautiful train trips.
Novel, Exciting, and Beautiful Trains in South America
Another luxurious experience can take you through Ecuador. Tren Crucero has a four day route that will take you from Quito, the capital, to Guayaguil. Each night, the train stops and its passengers stay in gorgeous hotels. Truly be pampered as you cross from the Pacific Ocean, over the Ecuadorian terrain, to the majestic Andes. Ecuador is home to exotic fruit, lush landscapes, and monkeys. Yes, some of the trains in South America bring you to monkeys (and other adorably unique animals). Your journey will cross over highlands of the awe-inspiring Andes. Peaks capped in snow are surrounded by colorful valleys that nourish the local Andean people. You’ll reach over 20,000 feet above sea level and will marvel at Chimborazo, the volcano that is the highest point on the globe as measured from the center of the Earth.
From the misty mountain tops, you’ll travel through rich river canyons and then descend through the cloud forests that make way into the dense tropical climate, rich with life. As the train heads toward the Pacific coast, you’ll begin to recognize the banana trees that line the scenery with vibrant yellows and greens. The many rivers help shape the coast’s culture in addition to the landscape. The land is fertile for fruit and sugar cane, as well as some of the best cocoa in the world. It is home to a wide array of plant and animal species that make Ecuador a biologist’s paradise.
Tren Crucero's World Class Experience
Tren Crucero’s Gold Class line offers unique experiences that are unmatched around the globe. They guarantee a unique experience with world class service. Each accommodation is chosen for its attention to detail and signature style. Not only will you stay in five star hotels, you’ll also experience authentic haciendas. The beautiful estates will transport you to a different time period when the opulent the Spanish lifestyle met rugged terrain. Hacienda Andaluza offers spacious rooms with splendid views of the Chimborazo volcano and charming gardens. It dates back to the 16th century and is stylized to match its quaint, historical country surroundings. Hacienda La Danza offers a farm-to-table dining experience, beautiful teak interior designs that invoke an atmosphere of late 19th century railway-life. It’s not all rugged, though. The staff is friendly, extremely accommodating, and you can enjoy a dip in the pool.
Take in the beautiful scenery as the Ecuadorian train carves down the side of the mountain in a zig-zag fashion. A hint of novelty mixed with true beauty gives this ride international recognition. Astonishingly, the train descends 500 meters in only 12 kilometers due to its renowned zig-zag pattern. From the village of Alausi to Riobamba, you’ll make your way across mountains, rocks, and into the Chanchan River gorge through the Andes. This magical experience takes the traveler on a woven path of gorgeous views of the breathtaking Andes. You can opt to only travel through the Devil’s Nose or make it a part of your luxurious experience aboard Tren Crucero.
The Final Resting Place of Trains in South America
Some of the special sites to see in South America are not only on the rails, but off as well. Come to Uyuni, Bolivia to witness a mesmerizingly interesting piece land that is home to the ghosts of trains past. The salty winds begin to aid in the trains’ erosion, yet these steel mammoths that lie on the outskirts of the Bolivian desert date back to as early as the early 1900s. Uyuni is a transportation hub to many other cities. For lovers of the rail, this is not a place to be missed. After you stroll through the train graveyard, engage the locals at the trading posts nearby. This ghost-town of sorts brings visitors back in time to when transportation was powerful, yet simpler. Book with Pie-Experiences if you want to check out the train graveyard during your three day Uyuni tour!
